We are all, I’m sure, well aware that Valentine’s Day is hot on our heels. It’s been impossible to avoid all the blog posts about what to wear, what to do, what to buy. To be honest, it’s pissed me off. Not because I’m such miserable old bag who hates Valentine’s Day and love and happiness.
No, I’m pissed off because it’s so heteronormative.
Everywhere I look I see tips on ‘What To Buy Your Boyfriend’ or ‘Have The Best VDay With Your Guy’. Or ‘How To Celebrate Valentine’s With Your Best Friend’. What about the girls who like girls? Who’s writing Valentine’s Day blog posts for the gay girls?
Instead of rolling my eyes, I thought I’d do something about it. Because I started this blog to try to help fill the gaps in the blogging community that frustrated me. And today, as an openly bisexual woman in a long-term relationship with another woman, I feel like I need to step up to the plate and represent the queer gals out there. We can be just as gross and soppy as the straight couples, after all.
Sarah Waters Tipping the Velvet – Whether you identify as gay, queer, bi, lesbian, or anything in between – chances are you’ve heard of Sarah Waters. She is the author for your torrid gay girl love stories and Tipping the Velvet is possibly her best known work.
X Files poster – Because this show is the best and Gillian Anderson is a stone cold fox. Duh.
Radclyffe Hall The Well of Loneliness – One of the first openly lesbian novels and often referred to as the archetypical gay book, this one’s for the woman who prefers to read the classics.
The L Word boxset – Yes, it’s on Netflix but there’s something special about a boxset. Especially when it’s a show that stirred many a feeling in a young gay girl’s heart in the ’00s.
Kate Spade notebook – Everyone loves stationery, and Kate Spade makes some of the cutest designs out there.
Autostraddle ‘Gal Pal’ t-shirt – If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. Tired of the tabloids refusing to acknowledge female relationships as anything other than ‘gal pals’? This is the shirt for you.
Tuesday Bassen ‘Girls’ pin – In case anyone was confused about your sexuality, just pin it to your jacket.
Ban.do ‘Love Potion’ mug – I don’t know about you, but I love receiving novelty mugs as gifts. Keep the romance flowing with this super cute VDay-themed mug.
TONYMOLY sheet masks – The latest Korean beauty trend to hit Western shores and stores. A gift for the lady who likes to be pampered.
Anker portable charger pack – Practical? Yes. Boring? No way, it’s called being thoughtful! Keep your boo’s phone charged at all times, so you can text her sweet nothings all day long.
Etsy Two Hearts print – Sometimes you just need a cheesy print to show your love. Support an independent business and buy a piece from Etsy when you do it.
Etsy ‘I Am Lovely’ print – Everyone loves compliments. Show your girlfriend how wonderful you think she is with this super cute print.
Laura Mercier Crème Brûlée Soufflé Body Crème – Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to buy someone the kind of luxury item they’d never buy for themselves. This Laura Mercier moisturiser is super rich and smells incredible.
Ban.do ‘Be Mine’ pin – This adorable retro-style VDay pin is the perfect little novelty gift. A girl can never have too many pins.
Tuesday Bassen ‘Ugly Girl Gang’ beanie – Another opportunity to support an independent artist and stick a big middle finger up at society’s expectations that you or your girl want to fit their standards of what defines ‘pretty’.
Etsy Avocado patch – Some call it ‘basic’ to proclaim your love for an avocado. Those people have clearly never had truly great guacamole.
P.S. If none of these float your boat or you’re strapped for ideas at the last minute, just cut to the chase and get her a Lovehoney gift voucher. Keep those lesbian bed death rumours at bay.
